Description
Images of the Tropical Forest is the result of 20 years of research and experience by the authors leading student tours and teaching courses in the biology and ecology of the tropics of Central America. In so doing, we have assembled representative examples of plant and animal biology of new world tropical forests. This book serves as an introduction to understanding the elementary dynamics of tropical forests - what they are, how site-specific they are, and how they differ from each other.
When most people think of a tropical forest, they picture overgrown and tangled jungles or magnificent tall trees, lush vegetation and exotic animals. However, real tropical forests are much more varied than these widely held visions. Traditional lowland wet tropical forests that most people associate with the term rain forest are only one type of tropical forest - there are many others. Also, other forests in the tropical regions of the earth such as dry, coastal, and montane or cloud forest offer very different habitats from the lowland forests and they support a wide variety of animals found only in specific areas, or forests of the tropics.
Images of the Tropical Forest examines these varied habitats and offers a visualization of how magnificent, and different, each of these forests can be. It also serves as an introductory guide for those going, or planning to go, to the tropics.
